9. Letting go and Post-exchange adjustment

Letting go

Letting go is one of the hardest but most rewarding parts of the exchange experience. Trust your teen to navigate their new world independently.

  • Problem-solving: Encourage your teen to handle challenges themselves. Suggest they discuss issues with their host family, local coordinator, or regional representative before involving you.
  • Support: Be a good listener without offering immediate solutions. Show encouragement and support for their adventure.
  • Parent networks: Connect with other parents of exchange students to share experiences and advice.

Post-exchange adjustment

Reuniting with your teen after their exchange is a joyous occasion. Be prepared for the growth and changes they’ve undergone.

  • Re-adjustment: Give them time to settle back into family life while appreciating the independence they’ve gained.
  • Stories and experiences: Show genuine interest in their stories and new perspectives.
  • New connections: Support them as they maintain relationships with their host family and friends abroad.
