2. Packing and departure
The departure date will be decided once the placement – host family and school – is confirmed and finalized.
With international luggage restrictions, help your teen to pack wisely. Typically, one suitcase and one carry-on are allowed, so check airline policies for weight limits and fees.
- Seasonal clothing: Consider purchasing seasonal clothing after arrival, as it saves luggage space.
- Important items:
- Translation app.
- Prescription medicines (enough for the entire stay).
- Glasses and contact lenses with backups.
- Laptop (check host family rules on computer usage).
- Mobile phone with an international plan or a prepaid SIM card.
- Power adapter for electronics.
- At least one formal outfit for special occasions.
- Leave behind: Expensive belongings and jewelry.
- Domestic flights: Note that domestic flights in the U.S. and Canada may not include checked luggage, so book and pay for it online before departure, or your child can do this when they check in on the flight.
