Not at all. You don’t need to be top of your class or speak perfect English. What really matters is that you’re motivated, open to new experiences, and willing to learn. Many students improve their English quickly once they’re in the UK. And if you’d like a bit of help before departure, we offer a digital prep course to get you started with confidence.

If you’re applying to the Classic program, you’ll be placed either in England or Scotland – depending on where a host family chooses you. However, if you specifically prefer Scotland, you can indicate that in your application and we’ll make sure to place you there. In the Select program, only schools in England are available.

Classic offers a more traditional exchange setup – a great choice if you’re open to different types of schools and locations. Select gives you more control over your experience, including school, subjects, and city – and it comes at a higher price point due to the added flexibility.

Most likely, yes. School uniforms are common and are seen as a way to build school spirit and a sense of belonging. You’ll fit in with the locals from day one.

You’ll follow a combination of core and optional subjects, depending on where you’re placed. In England, Sixth Form students typically focus on 3–4 A-level subjects in depth. In Scotland, you’ll study a broader mix – often 5 or 6 subjects – for a more general education.

If you’re having a hard time settling in, we’ll support you through it. Your local contact will help facilitate conversations and improvements – and if that’s not enough, we’ll work with you to find a new and suitable placement. Your comfort and safety always come first.

You’re never on your own. From day one, you’ll have a local contact person who checks in regularly and is there if you need help with anything – big or small. STS also provides 24/7 support, plus guidance before you go and during the entire exchange. Whether it’s school questions, adjusting to family life, or just having someone to talk to, support is always close at hand.

The cost depends on which program you choose and how long you plan to stay. In addition to the program fee, you should budget for personal expenses, school uniform and supplies, insurance, visa fees, and optional trips or activities. A monthly allowance of around £300 is recommended and a buffer of £300 for unexpected expenses.

Included in the fee is round trip flights, half/full board accommodation, placement in a local high school, Welcome Camp, pre-departure materials and preparation meetings for students and parents, 24/7 support, personal support from a local contact person and STS diploma after your exchange.

Yes, you’ll need a student visa for programs longer than 5 months. We’ll guide you through the application process. The visa cost isn’t included in the program fee, so make sure to include it in your overall budget. With the Celtic Crossing program no visa is required.

Absolutely! You can join optional group day trips arranged by local tour operators. The UK has a world-class public transport system, so it’s very easy to get around the country.

In many cases! Most schools offer clubs, teams, or creative activities you can join – whether you’re into football, music, drama, or something else entirely. Your host family or local coordinator can also help you find options outside of school. If your hobby is important to you, let us know when you apply so we can try to match you with the right program that fits your interests.
